New Jersey Men Arrested en Route to Somalia to Join Terrorist Organization

United States citizens Mohamed Mahmood Alessa, of North Bergen, New Jersey, and Carlos Eduardo Almonte, of Elmwood Park, New Jersey, were taken into custody at JFK International Airport in New York on Saturday, where they intended to take separate flights to Egypt on their way to Somalia to join designated Foreign Terrorist Organization Al Shabaab and wage violent jihad.



Rhode Island Town Councilmen Plead Not Guilty to Extortion and Bribery

Joseph S. Burchfield, Raymond L. Douglas III, and John A. Zambarano, all former North Providence, Rhode Island town councilmen, pled not guilty to indictments charging them with bribery and extortion. It is alleged the councilmen, while serving on the town council in February 2009, accepted a $25,000 bribe in return for favorable votes to permit a zoning change for a retail development project.



Virginia MS-13 Gang Member Sentenced for Murder

MS-13 member Alcides Umaña, of Arlington, Virginia, was sentenced to 240 months in prison for murdering a pimp during the robbery of the pimp and a prostitute in Alexandria, Virginia.



Nevada Man Indicted for Armed Bank Robberies

Austin Joshua Peterson, of Henderson, Nevada, was charged in a six-count indictment with two counts of armed bank robbery, two counts of using of a firearm during a crime of violence, and two counts of possessing a stolen firearm.



Texas Bank Branch Manager, Auto Dealer Guilty in $2.5 Million Check Kiting Scheme

Houston area residents Matthew Robbins, a former Wachovia Bank branch manager, and Thin Viet Tieu, an auto dealer and customer of Wachovia Bank, pled guilty to conspiring to defraud a Houston-area bank of more than $2.5 million through a check kiting scheme.



Texas Man Indicted on Child Pornography Charges

Curtis John Holt, of Houston, Texas, was ordered held in federal custody without bond pending trial on one count each of distribution and possession of child pornography.



Virginia Bounty Hunter Bloods Gang Member Pleads Guilty to Racketeering Acts

Bounty Hunter Bloods gang member Jamel Spaights, of Portsmouth, Virginia pled guilty to participating in a pattern of racketeering activity, including conspiring to commit murder, attempted murder, and conspiring to distribute controlled substances. He also pled guilty to possession of a firearm in a crime of violence.



Patient Recruiter, Physical Therapist Sentenced in Michigan Medicare Fraud Schemes

Miami resident Timothy Pierce, a patient recruiter for the Dearborn Medical Rehabilitation Center in Michigan, was sentenced to 48 months in prison for his participation in a fraudulent Medicare infusion scheme; and physical therapist Jay Jha, of Troy, Michigan, was sentenced to 27 months in prison for his participation in a separate fraudulent physical therapy scheme.



Maryland Man Sentenced for Five Retail Robberies

Robert Lanier, of Essex, Maryland, was sentenced to 175 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release for commercial robbery of five retail businesses located in Rosedale and Baltimore.
